Morgan Geekie tied the game with 12 seconds left in regulation and Elias Lindholm scored 2:32 into overtime as the Boston Bruins rallied from two goals down to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31, at TD Garden. The Bruins Blackhawks win ended Boston’s two-game losing streak and lifted the team to 10-4-1.
How the Bruins came back against Chicago
Chicago took a 4-2 lead when Connor Bedard scored on a backhand at 12:20 of the third period, according to the ESPN game log. Ryan Greene had put the Blackhawks ahead 3-2 less than three minutes earlier.
Boston answered 46 seconds after Bedard’s goal, when defenseman Mason Lohrei scored his third of the season, assisted by JJ Peterka and Tanner Jeannot. The Bruins kept pressing late, and Geekie beat goalie Arvid Soderblom with a slap shot at 19:48, with Charlie McAvoy and Peterka assisting.
In overtime, Lindholm won a faceoff against Oliver Moore and scored on a snap shot 10 seconds later, his fifth goal of the season. McAvoy assisted on both the tying and winning goals.
Frondell, Bedard and Kane lead the Blackhawks
Chicago’s Anton Frondell scored twice, first on a power play at 6:04 of the first period after Will Borgen was penalized for sending the puck over the glass, then on a deflection early in the second. Patrick Kane assisted on the first goal, which the Blackhawks said on social media was his 900th career assist, as reported in NESN’s live coverage. Bedard finished with a goal and an assist.
David Pastrnak scored Boston’s first goal at 13:05 of the opening period, set up by Pavel Zacha’s long rush after a save by Michael DiPietro. It was Pastrnak’s eighth goal of the season. Casey Mittelstadt tied the game 2-2 in the second period. TBR covered Pastrnak’s milestone night against San Jose in its Bruins-Sharks recap.

By the numbers: outshot, but stronger on the draw
Chicago outshot Boston 41-32, according to the ESPN box score. DiPietro made 37 saves on 41 shots for a .902 save percentage. Soderblom stopped 27 of 32 for Chicago, an .844 mark. DiPietro also started Boston’s 6-0 shutout of Nashville, covered in TBR’s Bruins-Predators recap.
Boston controlled the faceoff circle, winning 42 of 62 draws, or 67.7%. Lindholm went 17-for-24 and Zacha 13-for-17. Neither team was sharp on special teams: Boston went 0-for-3 on the power play and Chicago 1-for-3. The Bruins took 24 penalty minutes to Chicago’s 14, and Nikita Zadorov accounted for 14 of Boston’s.
The five goals were more than Boston scored in its previous two games combined. The Bruins lost 2-1 at Carolina on Oct. 27 and 4-1 at St. Louis on Oct. 29. Through 15 games, Boston has scored 55 goals and allowed 36, a plus-19 differential, by TBR’s calculation from ESPN results. The Bruins are 6-1-0 at home.

The chart shows how the two-game skid cut into Boston’s cushion. The Bruins were plus-22 after a 6-4 win over San Jose on Oct. 24, then fell to plus-18 after the losses at Carolina and St. Louis, before Saturday’s one-goal win moved them to plus-19. Chicago fell to 4-9-1 and has not won on the road this season, going 0-5-1.
What’s next for the Bruins
Boston hosts the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. ET, then visits the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, Nov. 5. The Bruins return home to face the Florida Panthers on Sunday, Nov. 8, according to the team’s schedule on ESPN. Chicago came to Boston after a 4-1 loss at Detroit on Thursday, according to the NHL.com game preview.
