President Donald Trump confirmed that U.S. forces struck Iran’s Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz overnight Monday into Tuesday, Nov. 3, calling it a minor attack, and said the United States may still carry out a major strike, according to Al Jazeera and Gulf News. In Tehran, a top security official called Washington’s response to Iran’s plan for reopening the Iran war‘s key shipping lane unconvincing, while Qatar said both sides remain committed to talks.

What we know
Trump told Fox News the target on Qeshm was an anti-aircraft facility, Al Jazeera reported. U.S. officials described the action as defensive strikes that followed Iranian fire at an American aircraft, according to Al Jazeera, and two U.S. officials told ABC News the strikes were defensive. No casualty figures for the Qeshm strikes had been reported.
Trump also said the U.S. may carry out a major strike that could involve a “heavy hit,” Gulf News reported, citing the BBC’s account of a Fox News interview. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has leaned toward a large attack but has not decided, according to Gulf News. U.S. media, citing officials, reported that Central Command had prepared strikes that could begin as early as Wednesday, after the midterm elections, when three U.S. aircraft carriers would be in the region, Al Jazeera reported. There has been no U.S. confirmation of an attack plan.

Iran’s response and the Hormuz plan
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, wrote on X on Tuesday that the U.S. response to Iran’s demands was not convincing, Al Jazeera reported. Iran’s proposal would reopen the strait over two days if the U.S. meets seven demands, including lifting sanctions and ending the U.S. naval blockade, according to Al Jazeera. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, said talks continue and both sides “remain committed to the negotiation process,” Al Jazeera reported.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker and chief negotiator, linked Tuesday’s U.S. election results to the war in a post on X on Wednesday, writing that Americans had said “NO TO WAR,” ABC News and Gulf News reported. President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran still seeks a resolution through dialogue, according to Gulf News.
Shipping: confirmed incidents and claims
Confirmed by UKMTO: the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said two unidentified projectiles struck a tanker’s engine room about 14 nautical miles northeast of Limah, Oman, on Tuesday, with no casualties reported, according to Al Jazeera and ABC News. UKMTO also reported that an Indian-crewed dhow was attacked in the strait and that Oman’s navy rescued the surviving crew, ABC News reported.
Unverified claim, Iranian state TV (IRGC statement): the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said four “non-compliant” tankers caught fire after striking naval mines near a prohibited passage south of the strait and that it halted two other ships, Gulf News reported. Al Jazeera said the claim could not be independently verified or linked to the UKMTO incident.
Unverified claim, Pars Today (Iranian state media): the IRGC said it destroyed two U.S. LUCAS attack drones over Bandar Khamir, Al Jazeera reported.
What happens next
The key questions are whether Trump orders the larger strike U.S. outlets say has been prepared and whether Qatari mediation produces a deal on the strait. Casualty figures, strikes and shipping data are updated on our Iran War Tracker, and U.S. carrier positions are on the Military Deployments Tracker.
