Democrats flipped at least four Republican-held governor’s offices in Tuesday’s midterms, highlighted by Gina Hinojosa’s defeat of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, which NBC News projected and called a stunning result. Democrats also took Georgia, Ohio and Iowa, news organizations projected.
The four flips
- Texas: Gina Hinojosa (D) defeated Gov. Greg Abbott (R), NBC News projected.
- Georgia: Keisha Lance Bottoms (D) won the open seat over Rick Jackson (R), NBC News projected.
- Ohio: Amy Acton (D) defeated Vivek Ramaswamy (R) for the open seat, the AP projected.
- Iowa: Rob Sand (D) won the open seat over Zach Lahn (R), the AP projected; NBC and CBS made the same call.
President Donald Trump blamed Abbott’s loss on Abbott becoming a “RINO,” Forbes reported. Read more in our story on Trump’s reaction to the midterms.
Democratic holds
- Pennsylvania: Gov. Josh Shapiro won reelection over Stacy Garrity, the AP projected. Our Pennsylvania preview laid out the race.
- Michigan: Jocelyn Benson won the open seat over John James, Decision Desk HQ projected, The Hill reported.
- Wisconsin: David Crowley won the open seat over Tom Tiffany, NBC News projected. He will be the state’s first Black governor, AZFamily reported.
- Arizona: Gov. Katie Hobbs won reelection over Andy Biggs, Decision Desk HQ projected.
- Massachusetts: Gov. Maura Healey won a second term, the AP projected. Our Massachusetts results story has the ballot questions too.
Republican holds
- New Hampshire: Gov. Kelly Ayotte won reelection over Cinde Warmington, NBC News projected.
- Florida: Byron Donalds won the open seat over David Jolly, Decision Desk HQ projected, according to The Hill. The margin was under 1 point when the call was made, and the AP had not called the race as of Wednesday morning.
Still uncalled
Races in Kansas, Maine, Nebraska and Nevada had not been called as of early Wednesday. We will update our 2026 election tracker as projections come in.
The Boston Report does not call races. Every winner listed was projected by the news organization named. Results are unofficial until certified.
