Background
National People’s Army unitsRFI reported Nov. 2 that Algerian troops escorting a convoy of about 60 fuel tankers, joined at the border by Niger’s armed forces, arrived in Agadez in northern Niger on Saturday, Oct. 31; it said, citing several sources, that an Algerian unit could be based in Niamey and that a former French forces headquarters site in northeastern Niger is also expected to host Algerian troops. Reuters reported Oct. 30 that the first Algerian army convoy had reached Arlit, a uranium-mining town in northwestern Niger, citing 10 people it spoke to; Algeria has not disclosed the size of the force or a timetable. Both chambers of Algeria’s parliament approved the deployment Oct. 25, and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered it Oct. 26, saying Niger had requested military assistance, per Al Jazeera and Reuters. It would be Algeria’s first foreign troop deployment since 1973. A Niger security source told Reuters on Oct. 25 that no troops had been officially deployed yet. An Algerian senator said the troops would protect economic infrastructure, particularly Algerian oil facilities in Niger. Number and timing have not been released. Route: Algeria → Niger (first convoy reached Arlit, as reported by Reuters; a convoy reached Agadez Oct. 31, as reported by RFI; Madama, near the Libyan border, was earlier named as a destination). Status: Deployed, as reported by Reuters (first convoy arrived).
