Background
Special forces soldiersSemafor reported Nov. 1 that President Donald Trump endorsed the deployment and, citing Axios, that as many as 2,000 Salvadoran troops are deploying, a number that could double or triple. Reuters reported Oct. 29 that around 2,000 Salvadoran soldiers were in Haiti as of the night of Oct. 28, citing a security official, and that two sources said the force would for now be capped at 2,500; President Nayib Bukele said Oct. 29 the deployments were nearly finished and that his government was covering 90% of the costs. Command and rules of engagement have not been made public, and a U.S. military official told Reuters that Pentagon C-130s helped with the airlift. El Salvador’s Foreign Ministry said Oct. 28 that President Nayib Bukele told Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé by phone he intends to deploy more than 2,000 troops to rescue the missing personnel and support anti-gang operations; the prime minister’s office confirmed the call and said it was in the framework of the U.N.-backed Gang Suppression Force, but did not say whether the new troops would join that mission, Reuters reported. Sent to help find four missing Salvadoran aviation technicians from the U.N.-backed Gang Suppression Force, ambushed Oct. 18, per officials cited by AP. Reuters reported Oct. 27, citing an anonymous security official in Haiti, that about 1,000 troops had arrived; it said command and length of stay were unclear and neither government immediately commented. A U.S. military official told Reuters that U.S. Southern Command provided C-130 transport aircraft for part of the airlift. The Washington Post put an earlier total at at least 200, citing one person with knowledge. Route: El Salvador → Haiti. Status: Deployed, as reported by Reuters (El Salvador Foreign Ministry announced the deployment).
