Wegmans Food Markets runs five stores in Greater Boston as of October 2026: Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Medford, Northborough and Westwood. None is inside Boston city limits. The family-owned grocer, which began as a produce business in Rochester, New York, in 1916, now operates 114 stores along the East Coast, according to the company.

The Stores That Did Not Last: Natick and Fenway
Greater Boston once had a sixth Wegmans. The two-level, 134,000-square-foot store at the Natick Mall, 1245 Worcester St., opened in 2018 in a former JCPenney. It was the company’s first multi-level store inside a major mall. Wegmans announced on June 1, 2023, that it would close the store, and it shut on July 22, 2023. In its announcement, Brien MacKendrick, human resources director for the Wegmans New England division, said, “with this non-traditional location we are unable to attract enough customers for our business model to work.” The company said all 365 Natick employees were offered jobs at other area stores. The Globe reported in April 2026 that Asian grocer T Market was preparing to open in part of the old space.
Boston itself was supposed to get a Wegmans in the Fenway. In 2013, developer Samuels & Associates proposed a 75,000-square-foot Wegmans as the centerpiece of an expanded Landmark Center on Boylston Street, according to the Globe. That plan stalled. In 2021, Universal Hub reported that the redeveloped complex, renamed 401 Park, would instead offer 50,000 square feet to Star Market in space once proposed for Wegmans. The Boston Report found no announced Massachusetts store in Wegmans’ current expansion plans, which a company spokesperson told Fox Business include Charlotte, North Carolina, Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh.
Where Wegmans Started: A Rochester Pushcart in 1916
The company traces its start to John Wegman, who sold fresh produce from a pushcart in Rochester while his brother Walter worked in their parents’ grocery store. In 1916, John opened the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company, and Walter joined him a year later, according to the Wegmans company history. In 1921 the brothers bought the Seel Grocery Co., which added general groceries and baking, Family Business Magazine reported.
In 1930 the brothers opened a 20,000-square-foot store with a 300-seat cafeteria, which the company describes as “gigantic” for the time. The business was incorporated as Wegmans Food Markets Inc. in 1931. Walter’s son, Robert Wegman, joined in 1937 and became president in 1950. The company says one of his first moves was to raise all employee salaries, and it added employee benefits in 1953 and profit sharing in 1954. Today Robert’s son, Danny Wegman, is chairman, and Danny’s daughter Colleen Wegman is president and CEO.
The family name also appears on campus in Rochester. St. John Fisher University says its Wegmans School of Pharmacy was created in 2005 after a $5 million gift from Robert Wegman and opened in September 2006.
Why Shoppers and Workers Rank Wegmans Highly
Workplace rankings. Fortune and Great Place To Work ranked Wegmans No. 5 on the 2026 list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, the company’s 29th straight year on the list. On its Great Place To Work profile, 91% of surveyed Wegmans employees said it is a great place to work, compared with 57% at a typical U.S. company. The same profile lists Wegmans at No. 1 among large retailers on Fortune’s 2026 Best Workplaces in Retail list.
Scholarships. Since 1984, more than 49,500 Wegmans employees have received scholarships totaling $155 million, the company said in a 2026 announcement. It named more than 1,500 new recipients for the 2026-2027 school year. Part-time workers can receive up to $8,000 over four years and full-time workers up to $16,000, with no limit on field of study.
Prepared food and store format. Wegmans stores pair a full supermarket with restaurant-style counters. The Medford store page lists Meals 2GO, which offers pizza, sushi, subs and salads for delivery, carryout or curbside pickup, along with catering. A company history booklet describes an “open air market ambiance” and says customers bring visiting family and friends to see their local store.
Customer surveys are mixed. Outside rankings are less uniform. In dunnhumby’s ninth annual Retailer Preference Index, released Jan. 7, 2026, Wegmans placed ninth among 81 U.S. grocers. Market Basket, a Massachusetts-based rival, placed second. The study found that saving customers money drives 41% of a grocer’s long-term success. In the American Customer Satisfaction Index, Wegmans scored 78 out of 100 in 2026, down from 83 in 2025, which matched the industry average. Trader Joe’s led with 86.
Wegmans and the Grocery Market
Wegmans competes in a large national market. U.S. grocery store sales were about $76.8 billion in August 2026, seasonally adjusted, according to U.S. Census Bureau data compiled by FRED. Wegmans is privately held and does not report sales by state. Shoppers comparing options can also see our guide to Asian grocery stores and food halls in Greater Boston.
