Boston’s best coffee shops are spread from Downtown Crossing to Jamaica Plain, Brighton, Brookline and Somerville. This guide lists 13 cafes and roasters outside Cambridge that Eater Boston or Boston Magazine have recommended, with addresses checked on Oct. 26, 2026. For Cambridge, see our separate guide to 14 Cambridge coffee shops.
How we chose these coffee shops
Every shop below appears on at least one of three published lists: Eater Boston’s map of the best coffee shops around Boston (updated Aug. 11, 2026), Boston Magazine’s guide to the best coffee shops around Boston (last updated September 2024), or Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston “Best Coffee Shop” winners. We left out Cambridge shops already covered in our earlier guide. We also left out chains. Addresses come from each shop’s own website unless noted. The descriptions report what those outlets said; The Boston Report did not taste-test the shops.
Downtown, Leather District and South End
- Ogawa Coffee, Downtown, 10 Milk St., Boston. Eater Boston describes the Japanese roaster’s shop as one that “elevates the casual morning cup” and points to its hōjicha latte made with roasted green tea powder. Ogawa’s site did not load an address for us, so the address comes from its Yelp listing and the Downtown Boston Alliance directory.
- George Howell Coffee at the Godfrey Hotel, Downtown, 505 Washington St., Boston. Eater calls it a European-style espresso bar with seasonal specials. Boston Magazine named it a Best of Boston Best Coffee Shop winner and noted that George Howell’s earlier Coffee Connection chain, which he sold to Starbucks in the 1990s, helped pioneer gourmet coffee.
- Gracenote Coffee, Leather District, 108 Lincoln St., Boston, with a second bar at 100 High Street Place. Eater says the Lincoln Street nook is tiny but that customers can “reliably count on getting a superior cup.” Boston Magazine notes the Lincoln Street bar covers just over 200 square feet. The High Street Place location also serves wine and coffee cocktails, according to Gracenote.
- Sip of Joy Café & Bakery, South End, 661 Tremont St., Boston. Eater recommends it for Turkish coffee and pastries from owners Matt and Burju Sari, with George Howell-roasted drip and espresso drinks for anyone in a hurry.
Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury
- Madhouse Cafe, Roxbury, 24 Blue Hill Ave., Boston. It is the most recent Best Coffee Shop winner listed in Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston archive. Boston Magazine described it as a Roxbury shop attached to a custom motorcycle garage. Eater says customers can watch the mechanics through a large back window, and that the cafe stocks Broadsheet coffee.
- Jadu, Jamaica Plain, 767 Centre St., Boston. Eater says the cafe, owned by Maya Mukhopadhaya, drew crowds from its 2024 opening. It serves Counter Culture coffee and masala chai from Boston-based Madhrasi Chai. Jadu’s site lists coffee hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Wednesdays, and a wine bar Thursday through Sunday evenings.
- Monumental Market, Jamaica Plain, 36 South St. This Best of Boston winner pairs El Colombiano Coffee beans with crates of vinyl from Light of Day Records, according to Boston Magazine. Its website describes it as “JP’s only nut-free bakery, cafe and record store.”
- Recreo Coffee & Roasterie, West Roxbury, 1876 Centre St. Boston Magazine gave it a Best of Boston coffee award. Its write-up contrasted Recreo with coffee production that the magazine called “notorious for labor exploitation.” Recreo’s own site describes it as a Nicaraguan coffee roaster that practices “social and environmental stewardship.”
Brighton and Allston
- Linger, Brighton, 525 Western Ave., at the Charles River Speedway. Eater added Linger, formerly Rite Tea & Espresso Bar, to its map in August 2026 and singled out its hōjicha drinks. The Speedway lists it as open Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays.
- Kōhi Coffee Co., Boston Landing, 92 Guest St., Brighton, plus 40 Berkeley St. in the South End. Boston Magazine calls the Brighton shop a “citified version” of the cafe that began in Provincetown, serving Tandem Coffee from pour-overs to growlers. Boston Magazine listed 130 Guest St.; we used the address on Kōhi’s current website.
Brookline and Somerville
- Brothers & Sisters Co., Brookline Village, 7 Station St., Brookline. In a May 2026 review, Eater Boston called it “the ideal neighborhood coffee shop” and reported that it brews Atomic Coffee Roasters blends from Salem and serves Jamie’s Ice Cream Co. from the window next door.
- Yego Coffee, Teele Square, 1212 Broadway, Somerville. Eater says owners Francois and Fatuma Tuyishime focus only on Rwandan coffee growers. Francois’s family grows coffee in southwestern Rwanda.
- 3 Little Figs, Somerville, 278 Highland Ave. Boston Magazine says cofounder Katie Rooney is a baker by trade and calls the coffee program “quietly one of the region’s best,” with Tandem Coffee and rotating guest roasters. Its site lists daily hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you’re in Somerville on a weekend, see our Somerville brunch guide.
Boston’s coffee shop economy by the numbers
Federal data puts the guide in context. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages counted an average of 346 private “snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars” in Suffolk County in 2025, with 4,438 workers. That is the federal industry code 722515, which the Census Bureau defines to include coffee shops along with doughnut, juice and ice cream shops. Average annual pay in the category was $31,304.
The first-quarter 2026 figures show 339 establishments and 4,194 jobs in March. That was 158 fewer jobs, or 3.6%, than a year earlier, the BLS data shows. Some of that shift followed chain closures such as the Starbucks closings downtown, though the BLS figures do not break out individual companies.
Coffee also costs more at the grocery store. The national consumer price index for coffee bought for home use stood at 299.1 in September 2026, up about 7.1% from 279.3 a year earlier, according to BLS data on FRED. The index tracks beans and ground coffee at retail, not cafe drinks.
Tips before you go
Hours vary widely. Several shops on this list close by mid-afternoon, and Ogawa, Linger and Monumental Market list Mondays as closed. Check each shop’s site or Instagram before making the trip. For more food guides, see our best pizza in Boston roundup.
